Katherine Johnson was a mathematician who worked for NASA in the 1960s. Johnson was part of a team of black women who were instrumental in the success of the U.S. manned space program.

In July of 1969, Johnson was then asked by Rufus Carlin and Lucy Preston to help NASA re-establish communications with Apollo 11. Following the moon landing, Johnson became NASA's first female flight director and had a movie made about her. (“Space Race”)
